Top tips on how to take care of your teeth and gums
Nobody wants to visit their dentist more often than they have to – so to help you to keep you and your family’s trips to see us here at Synergy Dental Clinic to a minimum, Dentist Dr Richard Armishaw has pulled together his top tips on how you can keep your teeth healthy.
1.BRUSH YOUR TEETH FOR TWO MINUTES, TWICE A DAY
One of the most important tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy is to make sure you brush your teeth twice a day, every day, with fluoride toothpaste. The best time to brush your teeth is last thing at night before you go to bed and at one other time during your day. Brushing is the best way to effectively remove plaque from all surfaces of your teeth.
2. BRUSH BABY TEETH AS SOON AS THEY ERUPT
When it comes to your little ones, start brushing their teeth as soon as they start to come through the gums. Don’t forget to avoid giving children sweetened foods and drinks.
3. FLOSS BETWEEN YOUR TEETH
To remove food and plaque lodged between your teeth, it’s important to clean between them every day using floss or interdental brushes. Ask your dental therapist for guidance on the most effective way to clean in-between your teeth.
4. ENCOURAGE YOUR LITTLE ONES TO GET INTO GOOD HABITS
Encourage your children to adopt a good dental health routine from an early age to help them to maintain healthy teeth for life. It’s recommend that you supervise tooth brushing until your child is eight years old by either brushing their teeth for them or watching them as they brush theirs to make sure they’re not missing any areas. From the age of seven, children can use toothpaste that contains 1,350 – 1,500 parts per million (ppm) fluoride, those aged six and under, should use a toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride
5. CUT DOWN ON SUGAR
To prevent tooth decay, limitthe amount of sugar in your diet. Sugar is hidden in many of the foods and drinks that we regularly consume; including some where you wouldn’t expect it such as fruit juices, smoothies and breakfast cereals. Reduce the amount in your diet and when you do have sugary treats, try to limit them to meal times.
6. REGULARLY VISIT YOUR DENTIST
Detecting problems early can mean they’re easier to treat. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you regularly attend your appointments because If problems are not detected and then treated early on, they may lead to damage that is harder to repair.
