Preventative dentistry

your smile is a beautiful thing - gum care and preventative education

Gum health is the most important aspect of ensuring that you keep your teeth for life. At Synergy Dental & Implant Centre we are passionate about helping you create and maintain a happy, healthy smile. Regular visits to our hygiene therapist will minimise the risk of tooth loss, reducing the risk of developing tooth decay and need for fillings. In addition, you won’t believe how clean and fresh your mouth will feel after visiting our Hygiene Therapist and experiencing our AIRFLOW EMS system.

Helping you achieve good gum health

We firmly believe that prevention is better than cure. We aim to minimise treatment by educating our patients on the best ways to achieve optimum gum health, in conjunction with regular hygiene appointments.

Most people don’t give much thought to their gums, assuming they are healthy if they brush their teeth regularly, but gums are just as important as teeth and there’s a much higher link to dental care and general wellbeing than many people think. Medical researchers believe that individuals with gum disease may be at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and respiratory infections.

Detecting gum problems early can mean they’re easier to treat. That’s why it’s important to make sure you regularly attend your appointments so that gum problems can be detected and treated early on.

What are the signs of gum disease?

One of the most important things to know is that gum disease can be completely symptom free. The disease process tends to follow an intermittent path over many years and often a person is entirely unaware that they are affected until the disease has reached more advanced stages. This is why regular dental check-ups are vital so we can identify and treat gum disease in its earliest stages.

Keeping your mouth healthy - regular hygiene care

Dental hygiene treatment is delivered by a specially trained Hygiene Therapist who will remove any hard-to-reach plaque from your teeth that may have built up over time. Here is what you can expect from a hygiene appointment:

  1. Your teeth and gums will be assessed to determine the amount of plaque removal you need and any risk factors will be highlighted.

  2. Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes. This process is also known as scaling and polishing.

  3. The Hygiene Therapist will also show you how to look after your teeth so that they remain free from plaque in the future. You will be advised on the best tooth brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using inter-dental brushes.

Bleeding and inflamed gums

Your gums are like cushions for your teeth; they surround the tooth from its crown to its root in the jaw and help to support a healthy mouth.

Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth, and without routine cleaning, gum disease can occur.

  • Red and swollen gums that bleed when you brush could be a sign of a type of gum disease known as gingivitis.

  • If gingivitis is left untreated it can develop further into a type of infection known as periodontitis. This affects the entire area surrounding the tooth, causing discomfort and difficulty when eating.

  • Eventually this kind of infection can lead to tooth loss and may require invasive procedures to replace the missing tooth.

Fortunately, this can be avoided by attending regular hygiene check-ups at the practice and maintaining a good daily hygiene routine. Brushing between the teeth, flossing and replacing your toothbrush every three months will also benefit your gum health.

Lesley Morgan-Barlow talks AIRFLOW!

In this short video, Lesley Morgan-Barlow, Business Director at Synergy Dental & Implant Centre explains the way AIRFLOW® works and the many benefits….

Plaque is the build-up of bacteria and saliva that collects on the tooth surfaces and other parts of the mouth.

If the plaque is allowed to collect around the teeth where they meet the gums, the gums can become inflamed, and gingivitis can occur. Some of the plaque bacteria are harmful and can cause gum disease.

Prevent plaque and tartar formation by brushing thoroughly twice a day.

Maintaining good oral health is really important, and if you are concerned about any of these issues, make sure you book an appointment with one of our dental team.

I have always feared the dentist however I really hated visiting the hygienist. Over time Synergy have built up my confidence with my gum care and when they introduced airflow to me I was so relieved! It’s so much more comfortable and a more enjoyable experience as it has warm water! I’m so happy to have this treatment now at every visit as the benefits for your dental health are fantastic!
